Back To School Rally 8/23
First, fyi, this is the 7th year that Path of Life Ministries has sponsored this rally and it is a collaborative effort/event with other Riverside Churches.

Sandals has volunteered to help with "overall volunteering".. being placed, where needed throughout the day....
We have also decided to provide a Sandals Tattoo/Facepaint & Chat Tent....  if any of you might like to staff that tent that, please respond accordingly!
You don't have to be an artist... just a lover of kids, willing to do creative creature brush strokes or apply cute tattoos... and chat with the kids!
We will also need a few to be line regulators/entertainers!

Then, we will also assist registering attendees, handing out backpacks & snacks, praying with kids, and providing Free Haircuts!
WE STILL NEED MORE STYLISTS TO ASSIST WITH THIS EVENT; SO, FEEL FREE TO FORWARD THIS E-NOTE TO ANY WHO MIGHT BE QUALIFIED AND WILLING TO HELP CUT & STYLE!

We will meet at Patterson Park at 9:00 on Sat., the 23rd, to set-up our Tattoo Tent, Sandals-connect over coffee & donuts, and pray before the event starts...

  Mission

The mission of Pura Vida is to create good by using capitalism to empower producers, motivate consumers, inspire business leaders, and ultimately serve the poor.

We believe in a different approach to business. One driven by good rather than greed. One that sees capitalism as an agent for compassion. Operated for charitable benefit, Pura Vida helps farmers, families and at-risk children in coffee growing communities around the world to build more hopeful futures. The work of Pura Vida is rooted in a desire to empower the poor in coffee-growing regions of the world. We welcome all people to serve with us in partnership.

Pura Vida Coffee is the business engine of our organization and has grown to become one of the largest sellers of Fair Trade, organic coffee in the U.S. This helps increase the standard of living for farmers and generates resources for our charitable work. Our charitable impact can be seen in four distinct ways:

By utilizing every facet of our company – capital structure, governance, employee recruitment, product sourcing, marketing and sales – to achieve social outcomes, we can demonstrate that the worlds of business and charity can not only co-exist, but can thrive on one another.

com+passion Friends
Com+passion Friends...

Kim and I have tagged our '08 theme for Sandals Com+passion outreach as... Expanding Sandals' Worldview.
We are offering opportunities through trips, events and book recommendations that we hope will get you all thinking about what
Being Real with Others around Riverside County and the rest of the world looks like!

With that, we would like to explain the name... notice the new "+" in the spelling?
"Com" stands for community and "passion" stands for the love we have for others in this world community...
We hope to build a passion for God in our communities....
How do we play that out at Sandals?
To be real, we are not always sure... it is challenging in this culture!
But, we are committed to being relevant, listening to Others, and trying to love Others however the Spirit leads us.
We have opportunities listed on our new Outreach Cards at the Tents after services...
The cards are now called Local Culture... for everything happening around Riverside County
And, Sandals Worldwide... partnering with our global teams around the world...
Check them out!

As well, we would like to recommend our Book of the Month by Jimmy Dorrell.
Jimmy spoke at a class that we sponsored last month and many who attended found this book to be very compelling(and an easy read!)...
You can purchase it from Amazon books online(amazon.com) or The Grove Bookstore.

In closing, we are hoping to give you many opportunities to consider in acting on your love for Others...
So, how big is your World View in Riverside?... Diane Miller, Com+passion Director & Kim Imai, Sandals Worldwide Director

                BOOK OF THE MONTH

Trolls & Truth: 14 Realities About Today's Church That We Don't Want to See

From Publishers Weekly

Dorrell, a Waco, Tex., pastor, calls the "corporate" Christian church to repentance for insulating itself against some of Christ's most profound and challenging teachings. Dorrell speaks from a position of considerable moral authority, as he's intimately involved in the lives of the urban poor and founded a flourishing church that meets under a Texas freeway overpass (the Church Under the Bridge) whose constituents range from mentally ill homeless substance abusers and tattooed bikers to college students and middle-class housewives. Dorrell's challenge to live more radically (i.e., biblically) is divided into 14 chapters on subjects like appearance, creativity, friendship and families, each illustrated with life examples from the "troll-like" people in his congregation. The Western church, he writes, "has lost its prophetic voice in the culture": church budgets don't always reflect Christ-like priorities, and members would rather merely give money to the poor than sit down and eat with them. Dorrell urges both individuals and Christian communities to break down the protective walls that shield them from dysfunction and to make the difficult choice to welcome all.
