Uganda Update #2

Apoyo matek!

(greetings!)

The last few days here in Gulu have been filled with tremendous growth both for the local community and our team. We have been given a crash course in door-to-door witnessing using translators, and have gone out sharing Christ in the local community and at the military hospital. In a few cases we have had to use two translators, one to translate from English to Acholi, and another to translate from Acholi to Swahili. It has truly been an amazing experience!

Sharing the Word at the military compound was very special occasion for us, as we were the first Christians allowed into the barracks to share the Gospel since Uganda gained its independence in 1962. After about 50 years of silence, outsiders sharing the Word of God have finally been allowed back into the military compound, and our team had the honor of delivering it! A huge step forward for the local Christian church, and a huge blessing for our team.

The four guys on the team, Davis, Jay, Matt and Brandon, had the opportunity to play a legit soccer game with some of the guys from Favour of God, against a team of soldiers from Uganda’s Division 4 Army. We got all suited up in jerseys and played in front of a crowd of about 500 people. It was a humbling experience to say the least. We succeeded only in shattering the perception in Uganda that Americans are good at everything! Coach Victor, who looks exactly like Gnarls Barkley, took us “mizulus” (white men) out of the game after about 15 minutes of play. It felt great just to be a part of it and learn the similarities and differences of how Africans play the game of football. We will definitely be honing our soccer skills upon returning to the U.S. in anticipation for our next visit to Uganda! (a sentiment expressed by everyone on our team).

The girls on Team Uganda have been busy spending time with the children at the House of Hope orphanage. Out of the 13 people on our team, 4 of us sponsor children here at House of Hope, and meeting them has been a very special and sometimes emotional experience.  The team as a whole has been challenged and stretched in various ways, being pushed out of our comfort zones and openly sharing the Gospel message with complete strangers across a language barrier. Today is day one of a 3-day crusade, and we are really excited to watch how God will move. We have been so busy with attending services three times a day (morning devotions, midday prayer meetings, and worship and evening devotions at the orphanage) that we have barely even noticed the lack of creature comforts that we are used to from back in the States, including intermittent water and electricity outages. Communications have been spotty at best, but hopefully our photos will make it along with this blog post. Please remain in prayer for our team and that God would use us in mighty ways to help Favour of God bring the Gospel to the people of Northern Uganda!

Blessings,

Brandon Reed
